Speaker Biography:
Lisbeth B. Schorr is Lecturer in Social Medicine at Harvard University and Director of the Harvard University Project on Effective Interventions. She co-chairs the Aspen Institute's Roundtable on Comprehensive Community Initiatives for Children and Families and has held leadership positions in numerous major national efforts on behalf of children and youth. Weaving together many strands of experience with social policy, community building, education, and human service programs, Ms. Schorr has become a national authority on "what works" for improving the future of disadvantaged children and their families and neighborhoods. Her published work is widely used by colleges, universities, policy makers, and practitioners: Within Our Reach: Breaking the Cycle of Disadvantage, analyzes social programs that have successfully improved the life prospects of disadvantaged children, and Common Purpose: Strengthening Families and Neighborhoods to Rebuild America, asserts that by acting strategically, focusing on results, and putting together "what works," it is possible to strengthen children and families and to rebuild communities.
Presentation Summary:
Ms. Schorr's lecture, entitled "Is a Richer Knowledge Base Within Our Reach?," crosscut several Decade of Behavior themes, including health and education. In particular, Ms. Schorr's talk focused on "what works" to improve outcomes for disadvantaged children, families, and neighborhoods, highlighting issues of social policy that can contribute to the knowledge base of the behavioral and social sciences.
