The Decade of Behavior Policy Seminars program is an effort to translate research into action by educating policy and opinion makers about the importance of the behavioral and social sciences.

Researchers across the behavioral and social science disciplines are generating myriad creative solutions to crucial issues facing our society today.  Turning this frontier research into action requires mobilizing the right forces-- those who make the policy decisions that have widespread impact on the lives of our nation's citizens. Congressional Briefings are one effective way to inform the public policy process of how research findings can be applied to solving societal issues.

• Behavior and Health: New Research, New Hope (September, 2002)
  
  Highlighted recent breakthroughs that the behavioral sciences have made in a variety of areas, including clinical trials, tobacco use, and schizophrenia, made possible by the National Institutes of Health's substantial increase in funding over the last five years.

  
  Jointly sponsored by the American Psychological Society,  the American Psychological Association, and the Federation of Behavioral, Psychological, and Cognitive Sciences in support of the Decade of Behavior theme of  "health."   

• Reactions to Terrorism: Attitudes and Anxieties (June, 2002)
  
  Examined how our world changed since the attacks on 9/11 and the anthrax incidents that followed so closely thereafter, drawing on data from three social science disciplines.
  
  Jointly sponsored by the Association Political Science Association, the American Psychological Association, the American Sociological Association, and the Consortium of Social Science Associations in support of the Decade of Behavior themes of "safety," "health," and "democracy."

• Children and Welfare Reform: The Role of Marriage in Childhood Outcomes (June, 2002)    
  
  Presented four experts on child development and welfare policy and their research findings on the importance of marriage on child development; organized in response to the upcoming reauthorization of welfare legislation.
  
  Jointly sponsored by the Federation of Behavioral, Psychological, and Cognitive Sciences, the Foundation for Child Development, and the American Sociological Association in support of the Decade of Behavior themes of "health" and "education."

• The Human Response to Disaster (April, 2002)
  
  Highlighted research in four scientific disciplines to address how people, governments, and institutions prepare for and respond to disaster.
  
  Jointly sponsored by the Association of American Geographers, the American Psychological Association, the American Sociological Association, and the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society in support of the Decade of Behavior theme of "safety."

• The Mechanics of Election Reform: From Registration to Results (March, 2001)
  
  Featured four distinguished scientists from various disciplines who presented research results on ways to review and revise our system of voting in national elections. 
  
  Jointly sponsored by the American Political Science Association, American Psychological Association, and the Consortium of Social Science Associations in support of the Decade of Behavior theme of "democracy."
